Of course, hope springs eternal in the form of a tease for yet another sequel that any Underworld fan has the right to be excited for. I cannot fathom how this would be true of any franchise, much less one thatвЂ™s been mostly carried by Kate Beckinsale ( Rise of the Lycans at least reasonably substituted Rhona Mitra). Instead, it boldly assumes that what you actually want from Underworld at this point is a lot of Theo James. What the latest sequel, Blood Wars, supposes it that maybe you donвЂ™t really want to see Selene do her thing so much after all. After unearthing the well-planned Lycan conspiracy in Underworld: Awakening (2012), Selene finds herself caught in the middle of an ancient war, hunted down like prey by both the Lycan leader, Marius, and her former brothers-in-arms, the betrayed Death Dealers. At the very least, it seemed to get it in a way previous entries did not. The previous entry, 2012вЂ™s Underworld: Awakening, seemed to finally grasp this, as it basically reduced its proceedings to wall-to-wall shootouts and other assorted ass-kickings delivered via BeckinsaleвЂ™s righteously pissed-off Selene (all in less than 90 minutes to boot). While I begrudgingly admire its commitment to crafting an elaborate story out of its straightforward premise, Underworld is at its best when it actually embraces that concept at a primal level.

The entire first 80% of the movie is rendered superfluous in one scene. Then, later on in the movie, with no such blood, the werewolves walk in there like they own the place and it is clear that they would have taken the coven has it not been for the arrival of a transformed Selene with significant backup. The werewolves specifically state that they 'looked for any weaknesses and there are none'. And here comes the spoiler: The very premise of the movie is that Semira's coven is impregnable and Marius would be foolish to attack it without the blood of Selene's daughter. There is also a hole in the plot worthy of a B-grade horror. Len Wiseman, or even MГҐrlind and Stein, could conceivably have turned this into a movie worthy of the franchise. Production was poor and clearly quite low budget (reuse of the same footage on a few occasions, etc.), the script was inadequate and, while Anna Foerster has put in some credible performances in TV, this was quite poor. It also means that this movie ruined the franchise for me. This means I really enjoyed the first three Underworld movies, provided we ignore the prequel which was no more than acceptable.
